Learning to Make Paper Strip Ornaments

Each year Wiebke’s sister, Bruni helps out with the Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child.  She helps check to make sure the boxes are packed properly, which is a huge undertaking.  In addition, this year as she did last year, Bruni (and whoever she can recruit) gathered to make some paper strip ornaments for the Operation Christmas Child boxes.  We were lucky enough to have her teach us as well!

Repurpose Old Christmas Cards

Wiebke and her husband have been cleaning out their basement when she came across several years worth of Christmas cards.  She was reluctant to let go of the memories, but decided it was time.  It was time to share the cards in a different but good way.  She recently read a devotion by Desiree Glass called A New Purpose that touched her heart and helped her to look at these repurposed Christmas cards in a new light.  Instead of getting rid of something that was precious memories for her. . . she discovered she’d be creating new ones for others.

A New Purpose by Desiree Glass: (Paraphrased by me)  Since Christmas cards are pictures and sayings that mostly express Jesus Christ’s birth and how it is celebrated then by sharing the cards with others we are in essence sharing the good news with others.

Repurpose Christmas Cards

Just imagine how many families we will reach by inserting these cards of hers into ornament kits for the Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes . . . they go all over the world!

Operation Christmas Child Shoebox

If you’re not familiar with the Operation Christmas Child box project you can check out the website here.   According to the Samaritan’s Purse website the boxes allow an opportunity to connect all over the world sharing:

The Amazing Journey of a Shoebox Gift Begins with You and Results in Evangelism, Discipleship, and Multiplication.

Operation Christmas Child

This creates an opportunity of sharing and caring from receiving the boxes to giving them.  From children to seniors, people pack shoebox gifts each year to bless children in need around the world. Parents often use the project to teach their kids about giving. Year-round volunteers support these efforts across the country (taken from Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child).

We had fun creating these Paper Ornaments and hope you will too! Click on the instruction picture to enlarge and/or print.
